Intermezzo from 1939 (clearly the greatest year ever for motion pictures) is quite a sad film and I find it hard to watch simply because you know from the start that Leslie Howard and Ingrid Bergman can't end up together in the end. Leslie Howard plays a famous and respected concert violinist who leaves his wife, son and adoring daughter in order to run off with his daughter's piano teacher, played by Ingrid Bergman in her first American film and reprising her role from the original Swedish movie.
That's all I have to say, aside from the fact that it's a beautiful film and you can see the great debt of human emotions flicker across Leslie Howard's face in it's short runtime. He was such a great and underrated actor.
You may notice that Leslie Howard's hair is blonder than usual. That's because he filmed it at the same time as GWTW, for which he had to dye it blonde in order for it to show up in Technicolor. He actually hated having to do GWTW and Selznick let him make this picture in return for playing Ashley. I think this is the better film, but you are welcome to disagree with me.
Intermezzo is available as a torrent and on DVD in Regions 1 and 2, I couldn't find out about Region 4.
